Mercy Medical Center / University of Maryland First Year ResidencyStaff physicians are encouraged to admit their most interesting or complicated patients to this service. Patients are covered by one of five resident teams, all of whom have meaningful clinical responsibility. Four of the five teams are led by hospitalists.

Usually, team makeup varies. Teams consist of first year residents and senior medical students (sub-interns), one or two junior medical students, a supervising internal medicine resident (second or third year), often a PA, and an attending physician.

Staff physicians sometimes admit patients as non-teaching. The residents do not see these patients unless an emergency arises. A senior resident plays a major role in deciding which patients should be classified as non-teaching.
